Speech to the House - URANIUM ROYALTY (NORTHERN TERRITORY) BILL 2008, Second Reading, 24 February 2009

Mr BRIGGS (Mayo) (6:02 PM) —It gives me great pleasure to rise and speak on the Uranium Royalty (Northern Territory) Bill 2008, which of course is a bill that responds to the concerns of the Uranium Industry Framework members. It addresses commercial concerns of uranium project proponents in the Northern Territory. It establishes a uniform royalty regime of 18 per cent for uranium projects in the Northern Territory, thereby delivering costing certainty to commercial operators in the plan... »

Speech to the House - EXCISE TARIFF AMENDMENT AND CUSTOMS TARIFF AMENDMENT (2009 MEASURES NO 1) BILL 2009, 25 February 2009

Mr BRIGGS (Mayo) (9:56 AM) —I rise to also speak on the Excise Tariff Amendment (2009 Measures No. 1) Bill 2009 and the Customs Tariff Amendment (2009 Measures No. 1) Bill 2009. The government claims that this legislation was designed to fund a new preventative health program and tackle binge drinking among teenagers, particularly girls. The price of ready-to-drink beverages and alcopops increased by 70 per cent overnight when this measure was announced in April 2008, and I will deal wit... »

I am pleased to advise that a number of organisations in the electorate of Mayo have been given funding under the Saluting Their Service program.   Saluting Their Service is designed to preserve our wartime heritage and involve people throughout the nation in a wide range of activities and projects.   The Goolwa RSL Sub Branch has been granted $4,000 to undertake work on the Goolwa War Memorial. The money will be used to upgrade the safety and access to the memorial and ad... »

Speech to the House - ADJOURNMENT, KANGAROO ISLAND CUP - 23 February 2009

Mr BRIGGS (Mayo) (9:51 PM) —I, too, rise to talk on a very important local event in my electorate which happened last weekend. I am sure most in this House would be aware of the Kangaroo Island Cup—the cup that stops the island—which was run on Saturday at the end of the three-day-long Kangaroo Island Racing Club meeting. It is a fantastic meeting. It truly does stop the island. Some of you will not be aware of Kangaroo Island. I know the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children’s... »

Bushfire Tragedy

Recently I spent the afternoon with the local CFS Commander and a Group Captain touring areas of the Adelaide Hills as they assessed the bush fire risk to houses. I must say it was a real eye opener. Some residents seem oblivious to the warning signs, even in the wake of the Victorian tragedy. Gutters filled with leaves, yards covered in grass and branches. For the CFS it was a frustrating drive.    The Scout motto of “be prepared” has never been more appropriate. ... »

Finally Some Good News for Nairne

I welcome the State Government’s belated announcement that the Nairne Primary School will finally receive funding for their school crossing.   Serviced by a dangerous school crossing, the student traffic monitors at the Nairne Primary School are too often negotiating heavy traffic and semi trailers in order to assist students on their way to School. A completely unacceptable situation.   The crossing has needed to be fixed for many years and my predecessor, former Member fo... »

Speech to the House - ADJOURNMENT, MAYO ELECTORATE: BUSHFIRES, 11 February 09

Mr BRIGGS (Mayo) (7:48 PM) —I congratulate the member for Calwell for her contribution. I too rise to speak about the events surrounding ‘Black Saturday’ in Victoria—not from a personal note but to reflect on some lessons that I think are important to take away from those tragic events on Saturday. We have lost so many good Australians, such as the one that the member just spoke of, in the last few days. We are all in shock and horrified by these events. It will take us some time as a community ... »
