No interjections: Question Time needs reforming

No interjections: Question Time needs reforming I noticed on Facebook recently that there was a group called ‘I confess: I watch Question Time and I LIKE it’. The group has surprising large membership of over three thousand highlighting the joy of Facebook; you can always find a niche! Some of the most famous and well known Parliamentary incidents have occurred in Question time. Remember the Paul Keating ‘I will do you slowly’ taunt to John Hewson and Peter Costello’s demolition of L... »

Speech to the Main Committee, MOUNT BARKER: FREEWAY INTERCHANGE, 17 September 2009

Speech to the Main Committee, MOUNT BARKER: FREEWAY INTERCHANGE, 17 September 2009 Mr BRIGGS (Mayo) (11.58 am)—I rise in this adjournment debate at the end of another sitting period to speak about probably the most important issue facing my home community of Mount Barker in the electorate of Mayo, and that is the proposal that has now been around for some time to build a second freeway interchange for Mount Barker, off Bald Hills Road. Unfortunately it appears that the federal Minister for In... »

Speech to the Main Committee, VALUE OF LOCAL SPORT, 16 September 2009

Speech to the Main Committee, VALUE OF LOCAL SPORT, 16 September 2009 Mr BRIGGS (Mayo) (9.55 am)—I welcome you, too. Please ignore what happens in question time. I rise to speak this morning on two examples of the value of sport at different levels in my electorate and, I think, throughout the country. The first is the Active After-School Communities program, which is run by the federal government. It is a fantastic program which is very well run in my electorate by Indra and his crew. They ... »

Julia: full-time worker or part time spinner?

Julia: full-time worker or part time spinner? Over the last couple of weeks the Deputy Prime Minister has been plugging two developing holes in a massive dam wall. The first has been caused by the waste and mismanagement associated with the Julia Gillard memorial halls debacle. A programme wasting so much money that a school in Sydney is going to refuse free money. The second hole in the dam wall is growing quickly and relates to her changes to the industrial award system and her promise ... »

Speech to the House, ADJOURNMENT - BUILDING THE EDUCATION REVOLUTION, 10 September 2009

Speech to the House, ADJOURNMENT - BUILDING THE EDUCATION REVOLUTION, 10 September 2009 Mr BRIGGS (Mayo) (4.50 pm)—Quite often in this place, a member from the other side refers to my previous employment with the former Prime Minister. It happened again today, and this time it was the member for Blair, and followed his speech on telecommunications. I cannot tell you what the member for Blair did in a previous life—I think he is one of the 80 per cent who are former union delegates—however, it d... »

Speech to the House, TELECOMMUNICATIONS LEGISLATION AMENDMENT, 11 September 2009  Mr BRIGGS (Mayo) (11:17 AM) —It is with great pleasure that I rise to speak on the Telecommunications Legislation Amendment (National Broadband Network Measures No. 1) Bill 2009 following the member for Braddon. I am sure we all look forward to the day when the member for Braddon can skype, and it will be an enjoyable experience I am sure for his family to have him dialling in each night and having his face ... »
