ELECTORAL AND REFERENDUM AMENDMENT (CLOSE OF ROLLS AND OTHER MEASURES) BILL 2010 - Second Reading
Mr BRIGGS (Mayo) (10:45 AM) —I am concerned that the member for Moreton is so eager to put off the election for so long; I am sure he will not do as badly as he thinks he is going to. Obviously, we hope the election is soon so that we can have the election of an Abbott government, as the Speaker pre-empted so helpfully yesterday. The member for Moreton made the point ... »

Main Committee, MINISTERIAL STATEMENTS, Indigenous Affairs, 24 February 2010
Mr BRIGGS (Mayo) (12:42 PM) —I do not think there is a more important topic that faces this parliament than closing the gap between Indigenous Australia and the rest of Australia. It is a shameful matter that there is such a large gap, particularly when it comes to protecting kids in this cohort of our community. I am reminded of my experience of 2007, when in a former existence I was working for the then Prime Ministe... »

Labor’s IR scare campaign: can the souffle rise twice?
Kevin Rudd has a big political problem. Tony Abbott has thrown him off balance with a couple of short jabs and he is struggling to regain its composure.
Tony Abbott has achieved this by punching at the key failures of the Rudd Government. It has changed the dynamic on the ground all of a sudden.
Labor’s marginal seat holders who just months ago were dreaming of an easy victory in the campaign this year are now talking da... »

Tomorrow the bi-annual hearing with the Reserve Bank Governor will take place at Parliament House in Canberra.

Australian apiarists left with half a bee industry
Food security is one of the major challenges facing the world. In the coming decade with the population expected to increase to around 10 billion, access to food particularly food that is safe and free from disease will increasingly challenge many nations.
Australians are rightly proud of the high quality food that we produce. But as the world grows flatter and we increasingly import food, the high standards that we expect in Austr... »

Water in the Pipeline
Residents of Point Sturt have at long last received water security with the completion of a pipeline to the Point Sturt Peninsula.
Since being elected in September 2008 and in conjunction with the Shadow Minister for Climate Action, the Hon. Greg Hunt MP, I lobbied hard for the funding of a spur pipeline from the existing Milang-Clayton line.
Faced with severe water shortages and experiencing one of the worst droughts on record, residents of Point Sturt were livi... »
