Media Release - Remembrance Day - Friday 11 November 2011

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Australians will pause to remember the men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations.

More than 103,000 Australians have made this ultimate sacrifice in defence of our values of freedom, tolerance and democracy.

In our own community, men and women have served our nation in the Australian Defence Force, with many not returning home. Left behind are the families and friends of those whose sacrifice is honoured on Remembrance Day.

I ask local residents to join with me and Australians right across the nation by pausing for a minutes silence at 11am today, to remember, reflect and commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the end of World War One and the sacrifice of 103,000 Australians in all wars.

I also encourage all residents in Mayo to show their support for our veterans and their families by buying a poppy and wearing it proudly today. In Australia, the sale of poppies assists the veteran and ex-service community to provide care, support and assistance to veterans, war widows and their families.
