Media Release - Bowen's afterthought meeting - Monday 1 November 2010
Today the Immigration Minister is visiting the Adelaide hills to hold a meeting with a hand-picked group of people to tell them about a decision he has already made.
The Minister should be today holding an open forum in Woodside so he can hear the concerns of the whole community.
He should not be excluding people from his meeting. He should be doing what the Prime Minister should have done two weeks ago when she was in the Adelaide hills and drive to Woodside and give all residents an opportunity to raise their concerns.
I hope the Minister tells the hand-picked group that his decision to build a detention centre at Inverbrackie was made because of Labor’s failed border protection policies.
The Minister should also concede today that he should have consulted with the community before he made this decision and accept that the best way forward is to support the Coalition’s motion to hold a Parliamentary inquiry before any further action is taken.
